Drama Therapy

Dramatherapy is for everyone ~ you do not need to have any experience with drama to benefit from this type of therapy. Dramatherapy is for people of all ages and abilities, and can work on an individual or group basis.

When you work with a Dramatherapist, dramatic and creative techniques are used to explore your existing feelings, beliefs and attitudes. It is an embodied method of working with a therapist that can facilitate imagination, learning, insight and growth. The session may involve traditional dramatic techniques such as role-play, movement and voice, as well as witnessing, improvisation, enactment, story-telling and theatre games, which helps people access their feelings through the drama of play. Vikki Watts, Little Window's Dramatherapist, uses a person-centred and non-directive approach.

When we use creative methods such as stories, sand-play, sculpt, music and visual art, we are able to discover and tap into different experiences of ourselves and the world around us Sessions work at your individual pace and level/stage and so for some people, words may not be used, and for others, their voice may be found within the creative process such as through a puppet, art, or in written form. This helps us to explore our world in a safe and non-confrontational way.

Dramatherapy works effectively with children, adults and young people and can support our physical, psychosocial, social and emotional well-being. Creative processes can be a way for people to explore and express feelings that may be hard to put into words and to find new pathways to healing. A Dramatherapy session does not require any experience or expertise in the creative arts but instead taps into our innate expressive language which helps us engage in the world around us. It is a gentle and accessible therapy which has been shown to be particularly beneficial for people who have experienced trauma, anxiety or who are neurodivergent, e.g., Autism or ADHD.

Dramatherapy can enable you to step back out of your present situation into an imaginary world where anything is possible; for example, words that cannot be said elsewhere could be spoken through a story. Through the Dramatherapy process, you are supported to developemotional skills and expressive language so that you can find relevance and meaning in your present life. This may be done verbally, or may just be experienced or sensed. It can offer a chance to look at your concerns indirectly as well as the opportunity to develop aspects of yourself, such as accessing or enhancing your creative side, or exploring alternative life roles.
