Our Therapies

Children & Parenting Support

Parents and caregivers often bring their child to therapy for emotional, social, and behavioural support. Working with children often involves working with their caregivers and their families to ensure sustainable therapeutic outcomes.

There are many benefits of counselling for children and their families. Therapy can assist parents and children to learn new skills and ways to communicate in the family, build emotional regulation, and facilitate positive changes in the brain within a safe, expressive, and contained environment.

Our development begins from the moment we are in-utero, and from the first experiences we have had with our own caregivers. Being a supportive and insightful parent begins with understanding your own attachment with your caregivers and how this has impacted on you throughout different stages in your life. Your relationship with your child and the way that you respond to them can significantly impact on their emotional regulation as well as their behaviour.

Our psychologists and therapists use a relational, person-centred approach with parenting that focuses on facilitating healthy attachments, building empathy, and enhancing emotional expression and regulation skills in the family. We engage you as the parent to be a 'co-therapist' to support your child. Working with parents is a wonderful way to develop a sense of safetyself compassion, and self-esteem in our children. We take the perspective that it is not ‘correction’ that is important in child behaviour, but ‘connection’. How secure a child feels within themselves, as a result of how secure they feel in their primary relationships, has the most significant impact on how they behave and relate to the world.

We work closely with you as the parent to provide feedback on how your child is going in therapy, and will also teach you strategies learned in sessions so that skills can be translated from the counselling context to home and school.

Little Window is one of the only private Brisbane-based psychology practices that provides a fully-equipped play therapy room to effectively engage children and young people in therapy.
